Major Festivals & Events
Onam
Onam is the biggest festival in Kerala and is the harvest festival. It falls during the Malayalam month Chingam (August - September) and lasts for ten days. Onam marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. Intricate flower carpets, elaborate sadyas, snake boat races, Puli Kali, Kaikottikkali are some of the main features you can see during Onam.
Vishu
Vishu is celebrated on the first day of Malayalam month Medam(April - May). It marks the New Year in accordance with the malayalam calendar known as the Kolla Varsha. Vishukanni - "the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up", is the most important event.
Thrissur Pooram
Thrissur Pooram is called 'the pooram of all poorams'.The word "pooram" means 'the meeting point for all arts'. This festival is celebrated during April - May and lasts for 36 hours. The attraction of Thirssur Pooram is the procession of around 20 or more elephants decorated with nettipattam.(gold headdress), beautifully crafted kolam, decorative bells and ornaments etc.
In addition to this is the panchavadyam, the rhythmic beating of the drum.The fireworks display in the early hours of the next day are simply amazing.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Nehru Trophy Boat Race is popular snake boat race conducted on Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha, on the second Saturday of the month of August every year. The major attraction of the boat race is the competition of snake boats popularly known as chundanvallams. Chundans (snake boats) are an impressive sight, measuring over 100 feet in length. The impressive Vembanad lake plays host to this race.
Cuisines
Kerala cuisine has a multitude of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes prepared using meat, fish and poultry. Two main ingredients in Kerala cuisine include spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, green and red peppers, cloves, garlic, cumin seeds, coriander, turmeric),coconut milk/oil.

- Sadya (usually available during the Onam season).This is usually a vegetarian meal served with boiled rice and a host of side-dishes on a banana leaf complemented by Payasam at the end.

Cultural & Art Forms of Kerala
Kerala is well known for its diverse array of performing arts. We list a few of them below with a small description each.
Chaakyaar koothu
Performed in temples. Usually performed in a special dance hall called Koothambalam. It consists of two parts, of which one is action and the other narration. Emphasis is mainly on facial expressions and choreography is minimal. Usually the Chakyar narrates a verse in Sanskrit before explaining the meaning of it in Malayalam. Uses wit and humor to criticize contemporary events/personalities.
Kathakali
Highly stylized classical Indian dance-drama noted for the attractive make-up of characters, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. Kathakali is considered to be a combination of five elements of fine art: Expressions (Facial), Nritham (dance with emphasis on rhythm and movement of the whole body, legs and hands), Mudras(which are hand gestures), Vocal(geetha) and Instrument accompaniment (Vadyam).
Koodiyattam
Considered to be the forerunner of art forms in Kerala. Traditionally enacted in temples and performed in Sanskrit. The word "Koodiyattam" literally means "combined acting". Traditionally performed by Chakyars and Nangiyaars.
Margam Kali
Usually performed by the Syrian Christians of Kerala. Focuses on graceful body movements."Margam" means path/way or solution in Malayalam. This folk art is usually performed by a dozen dancers singing, dancing and clapping around a Nilavilakku wearing the traditional white dhoti ("mundu") and blouse ("chatta")
Theyyam
Popular Hindu ritual form of worship usually seen in the North Malabar area. Theyyam is a corruption for Deyvam ‘God'. No stage or curtain or other such arrangements for the performance. In other words, it is an open theatre. Practices such as spirit-worship, ancestor-worship, tree-worship, animal worship, serpent-worship, the worship of the Goddesses of disease and the worship of Graamadevataa (Village-Deity) are included in the main stream of the Theyyam cult . Performed without proper make-up or any decorative costume.
Mohiniyattam
Is a classical dance that adopts a way between the two streams of classical dances – Bharatanaatyam and kathakali. Essentially is a solo dance form performed by females. The words "Mohini" means a woman who enchants onlookers and the word "aattam" signifies graceful and sensuous body movements. The word "Mohiniyattam" literally means "dance of the enchantress". The entire dance is of a soft grace, gliding movements of the body, a circular use of the torso and revolving in a half-bent position, with the toe and the heel used in a flowing rhythmic structure.
Oppana
A popular form of social entertainment among the Mappila community of Kerala, predominantly seen in Malabar side. Opanna is generally presented by fifteen females on a wedding day. The Muslim bride dressed in all finery, covered with gold ornaments and her palms and feet adorned with an intricately woven pattern of mylanchi (henna), sits amidst a circle of dancers. The bride sits on a chair around which the singing and dancing take place. As they sing, they clap their hands rhythmically and move around the bride using simple steps.
Kalaripayattu
One among the most ancient traditional systems of physical, culture, self-defence and martial techniques still in existence. Practised predominantly in Kerala, it includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry and healing methods. It's techniques emphasize lower body strength and speed. Apart from the physical abilities, qualities such as concentration, confidence, bravery and fearlessness are achieved by the rigorous training in Kalarippayattu.
Pulikali
"Puli" in Malayalam means tiger and "kali" means play. It's a colorful folk art in which numerous performers who are painted like tigers and hunters in bright yellow, red, and black colors dance to the beats of instruments. Usually seen during the Onam time .Performance revolves around the theme of a tiger being stalked by a hunter. Normally seen in Thrissur district in Kerala.

North Kerala Beaches
Bekal
The beautiful expanse of the shallow beach near the Bekal fort known as Bekal Fort Beach has been developed as an exotic beach location. The beaches feature placid surf and the beach land is shallow, particularly near the famous fort. Adding more charm to this spectacular landscape are the swaying palm trees that border the beach. There is a beautiful walkway which has been laid so that visitors can have a panoramic view of the Bekal fort.
Kappil
Kappil Beach is said to be one of the best kept secrets of God’s own country.It is around 6 km away from the Bekal beach.It is said to offer one of the most panoramic views of the sea. The beach cover an area of about twenty-five acres land.
Kappad
Kappad finds mention in history and geography texts as the gateway to the Malabar Coast. Here, approximately around 500 years ago, around 170-180 men led by the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama sailed in and stepped into Kerala to create a new chapter in history; the story of a long and tumultuous socio-political relationship between India and Europe. To a new visitor, however, this little sea faring town is a haven. The best route to Kappad is along the backwaters. Un-spoilt and un-crowded, the picturesque backwaters of Kozhikode offers a bewitching experience. A ride down the backwaters through the Korappuzha river brings you to the beach. The pleasant stretch of rock-studded beach is also known as Kappakkadavu.
South Kerala Beaches
Allepey
Commonly referred to as "The Venice of the East" by travelers from across the world, Alleppey is blessed with nature's green beauties such as lagoons, vast lakes and numerous fresh water rivers, Alleppey is also well known for its snake-boat race - the Nehru Trophy Boat Race , held on the second Saturday of August. The beach itself is a long sandy one. Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attraction of the Alappuzha beach. Another great fascination is the old lighthouse nearby.
Kovalam
Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees.The coconut trees along the beaches truly give the beach a ravishing look. Kovalam is an internationally renowned beach with three adjacent crescent beaches. The crescent-shaped Kovalam Beach can be divided in three parts. The southern most beach, and the most popular, is the Lighthouse Beach. The middle beach is called Hawah. Each morning this beach acts as a base for the local fisherman. The northern most beach, Samudra, is least affected of all by the changing times. The leisure options at this beach are plenty and diverse. Sunbathing, swimming, herbal body toning massages, special cultural programs and catamaran cruising are just some of the options available.
Varkala
A very serene beach, Varkala beach is said to be rich in mineral water springs. A dip in the holy waters at this beach is believed to cleanse the body of impurities and the soul of all sins and hence the name 'Papanasam beach'. Located very close to the beach is a supposedly 2000 year old Janardhana Swamy Temple. Seeing the sunset at Varkala is said to be breathtaking.
Central Kerala Beaches
Mararikulam
Marari Beach originates from " Mararikulam ", one of the local fishing villages.Here, life still goes on much as it did a hundred years ago, with the men going out to sea each day to earn a living bringing in the daily catch. Marari Beach Kerala offers endless miles of superb sand beaches where you can experience the local charm and traditional Keralan hospitality at it's best. The village of Mararikulam is tucked away behind a line of dense palms that rise like a green fortification of the sands. A must visit in Mararikulam is the traditional coir-making units.
Cherai
This lovely beach bordering the Vypeen Island is ideal for swimming. The sea on the Western side and the backwaters on the East give this beach a uniqueness which can be found only in Kerala. Thick coconut groves and Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront are added attractions. The 15 km of long golden beach is mostly clean and shallow and attracts swimming and sunbathing. Dolphins are occasionally seen here.
Hill Stations
Munnar
Situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala, and perched about 1600 m above sea level, the hill station of Munnar once used to be the summer resort of the erstwhile British administration in south India. This hill station is marked by vast expanses of tea plantations, colonial bungalows, rivulets, waterfalls and cool weather. It is also an ideal destination for trekking and mountain biking. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, which towers over 2695m. Anamudi is an ideal spot for trekking. Munnar also is home to a lot of tea plantations. If you are interested in knowing more about the origins and growth of tea plantations, you must visit the tea museum which was opened some years ago by Tata Tea.
Wayanad
Wayanad is a bio-diverse region spread across 2,132 square kilometers on the lofty Western Ghats. It is one of the view districts in Kerala that has been able to retain its pristine nature. It is known for its picturesque hill stations, sprawling spice plantations, luxuriant forests and rich Cultural tradition. As it is situated at a height of 700 - 2100 m above sea level, the district's climate and the geography make it ideal for the cultivation of coffee, tea, cardamom, pepper and rubber.
Rajamala
Beautiful Rajamala exists around 15 km from Munnar. It's the abode of the famous "Nilgiri Tahr". Here,you can Trek to your heart's content while the clouds slowly descend upon you. There are beautiful trekking routes in Rajamala.
Vagamon
Like a lot of other beautiful things in life, Vagamon too has to be experienced, not read about or its stories merely listened to. It's an enchanting hill station located on the Idukki-Kottayam border, dotted with gardens and beautiful meadows. This sleepy town sometimes referred to as the "Scotland of Asia" enthralls you with it's scenic valleys, beautiful green meadows, enchanting pine forests, mists, fogs, tea estates, waterfalls. Vagamon has amenities for trekking, paragliding, mountaineering and rock climbing.
Wild Life(inclusive of birds) Sanctuaries
Kerala has a forest area of 11,125 sq km, which covers almost 29 percent of the total land area of the state. There are Five National Parks and 13 Wildlife Sanctuaries in Kerala. These parks and sanctuaries cover 2250 sq km, which is 24 percent of the total forest area and 6 percent of the total land area of the state. Nestled in the lush forests of the Western Ghats in Kerala are 12 Wildlife sanctuaries and two National Parks.

South Kerala wildlife
Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary
The Neyyar wildlife sanctuary is situated at a distance of 30 kms from Trivandrum. This is the habitat of over a hundred species of fauna including Asian Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Slender Loris and reptiles like King Cobra, Travancore Tortoise, etc. A crocodile breeding centre and a lion safari park are also located in the dam site.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is spread across 14 acres is a favorite haunt of migratory birds and can be termed an ornithologist's paradise. The village of Kumarakam is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake, and this small water world is part of the Kuttanad region. During the periods of June and August, you can see resident wetland birds such as Indian Darter, Little cormorant, different species of egrets and herons, white ibis, several species of kingfishers etc. Between the months of November and May, the park plays host to rare migratory birds such as aterfowl like pin-tailed duck, garganey teal, spot-billed duck, birds of prey like osprey, marsh harrier, steppe eagle, etc.
Central Kerala wildlife
Eravikulam National Park
This park is in Munnar and is a sanctuary for the endangered mountain goat, the Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrious), the Eravikulam National Park stands out for the stark beauty of its rolling grasslands and sholas, spread over 97 sq km in the Kannan devan hills. Visitors are taken to Rajamalai in forest dept vehicles and given an opportunity to see all this. Private vehicles are not allowed here. The National Park is usually closed at the time of calving of Nilgiri Tahr which is usually during the early months of every year. You can also see wilflife such as the Nilgiri Langur, leopard, tiger, Indian bison.
Thekkady
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Periyar Lake - an artificial lake, at Thekkady. Take a boat cruise in the Periyar lake and you can see the Asian elephant, Indian bison, sambar deer, Indian wild dog, Barking deer. If you are lucky, you may have a tiger sighting as well. Endangered lion tailed macaques can be found in the interior evergreen forests. Both the bonnet macaques and Nilgiri langur can be seen in the trees near the boat landing whereas the Malabar giant squirrel is seen everywhere.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary
The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of hardly 25 km², and located about 60 km north-east of Kochi (Kerala state, India), is one of the important bird sanctuaries of India. Salim Ali, one of the best known ornithologist has described this sanctuary as “the richest bird habitat on peninsular India”. The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary has a rich and varied birdlife. Spread across 25 sq. km. the sanctuary lies between the tributaries of the River Periyar like a peninsula. It also has extensive plantations of teak, rosewood, mahogany.
Silent Valley
This park exists around 40 Km from Palakkad. Silent Valley is considered one of the most ecologically diverse areas on the planet. Entry into the valley is allowed only from 8AM to 2PM, as you need about one and a half hours (each way) to go to the Valley and come back. The Forest Department deliberately does not allow going to the valley early in the morning to minimize disturbance to the animals. More than 1000 species of flowering plants , more than 34 species of mammals, about 200 species of butterflies, and about 150 species of birds can be found here.
Chinnar
This is located about 60 km from Munnar. Chinnar is the habitat for the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India. Deep within the sanctuary, the spectacular Thoovanam waterfall is located. There is also a an extensive Sandalwood forest nearby.
North Kerala wildlife
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
It is an animal sanctuary in Wayanad, Kerala, south India. It is on the way from Mysore to Sultan Battery. Wild animals such as Indian Bison, elephant, deer and tiger can be spotted here. Rich in bio-diversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It is bestowed with lush green forests and rich wildlife. This is also known as the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary.
Backwaters
The backwaters in Kerala are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, and is a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways. The Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom
Kumarakom is situated at a distance of 16 km from Kottayam. It is the largest lake in the state of Kerala. A lake spanning several districts in the state of Kerala, it is known by different names in different localities viz. Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad, Kochi Lake in Kochi. This small backwater village, which is a cluster of islands, has a life of its own, with a slow, serene rhythm. The sights, sounds and fragrances will simply take you to a different world.
The celebrated Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted in a portion of this lake, in the Kuttanad region, known as the Punnamada Lake. Take a memorable houseboat cruise on Vembanad Lake at sunrise and sunset to enjoy a breathtaking view of the setting sun.
Ashtamudi kayal
Ashtamudi means, 'eight-armed', after the eight arms of the lake. It is the second largest and deepest wetland ecosystem, a palm-shaped (also called octopus-shaped) large water body, next only to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. A boat cruise through the Ashtamudi kayal winds through lakes, canals and water bound villages, and gives a complete exposure to the beauty of the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake. Chinese fishing nets, called cheena vala in the Malayalam language, are used by local fisherman and are a common sight along the waterway.
Allapuzha
Allapuzha, popularly also known as the "Venice of the East." has a labyrinth of canals in Alappuzha. The canal networks linked to the Vembanad Lake offer an inspiring and interesting experience. You can enjoy the sights of vast stretches of paddy fields, coconut lagoons and pied King Fishers hurtling down to catch the fish. During your cruise, you can see fishermen engaged in fishing activities on country boats, folks inclusive of children using kettuvallams, the majestic rice barges, gliding over the canals. If you are lucky, you may see large flocks of ducks being taken to newly-harvested paddy fields.
If you get a chance, you should ask the boatman to take you to a vilage where you can see the process of coir making. Don't also forget to ask the boat driver to take you to a place were good toddy (a natural beverage extracted from coconut trees) is obtained.

A leisurely walk through the Fort Cochin area which gives you a close look at the operation of the huge cantilevered Chinese fishing nets introduced by Chinese traders which is still used in kerala backwaters as a traditional way of fishing.

AM AM transfer to Munnar ( 4 hrs drive), once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Govt in South India, Munnar is located at the confluence of 03 rivers as the very name signifies.The sprawling tea plantations and picturesque towns make Munnar a popular hill resort town in South India.

AM transfer to Thekkady (Periyar) (4 hrs drive). Thekkady has one of the worlds most facinating natural wildlife reserves noted for its geography,diverse wildlife and scenic beauty.
1300 Hrs arive at Thekkady and check-in at Hotel
Eve Boat ride on the Lake Periyar where one can have a unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake.The greatest attraction of Periyar,however are the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake. ( Wild life viewing is always dependent on one's good fortune)

Day 06
Early AM 0730 Hrs Jungle walk - The forest provides specially trained guides who can be hired at the hotel for early morning treks into the jungle - the treks are of 3 to 4 Hrs duration. These treks are an ideal way to really feel the forest and to experience it closely.
1130 Hrs back at hotel.
PM proceed for a spice plantation visit where oner can see the cultivation of a whole range of spices like, pepper, cardamon, cloves, turmeric, vanilla, all spice cinnamon etc. this followed by a visit to the spice shops large & small which are found in the small town of Kumily just one kilometer from the hotels.

0800 hrs transfer to Kumarakom.
1300 hours commence an overnignt house boat cruise toAlleppey, which gives one a facinating insight into the life of a Keralan Backwater Village .As the boat glides along the backwaters one can see the daily life in the backwater villages: the daily life in villages on narrow strips of land ,fisherman fishing,children swiming & playing in the water, women doing their daily chores, mobile shops in tiny canoes,the cultivation of paddy & its harvesting (during harvests season) huge country barges ferrying the coconuts, rice, coir etc. people travelling to the mainland for work and numerous small market places, tiny temples & churches etc.
Note: The cruise commences at 1300 hrs with lunch served on board and continues till dusk. At dusk the boat will anchor in a wide waterway or lake for the night (The backwaters close to boat trafic at dusk as the fisherman lay their nets in the backwaters. Other boats are not allowed to ply in the backwaters after dusk. On the following day the cruise commences again after breakfast and the guest will be dropped at Alleppey by 1000Hrs.
